Subject: India's Republic Day - Support Sikh People’s Initiative To Combat The Existential Threat To Sikhism In Modi’s India
Honourable Member:
My Name is and I am a member of the global Sikh community.
I am writing to you regarding an issue which carries existential value for me, my family and the Sikh people at large.
On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was enacted with a provision which fatally attacks the identity of Sikhism as a separate religion and violates the religious freedom of Sikh people. Explanation II to Article 25(b) of the Constitution of India declares “Sikhs” as “Hindus”. On the basis of this Constitutional provision, till today, the State of India continues to subject the Sikh peoples to the personal and family laws of Hinduism codified in The Hindu Marriage Act; The Hindu Succession; The Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act; and The Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act.
